About WingXpand

WingXpand is Expanding What’s Possible™ with Autonomous Systems, building long-endurance, backpackable smart plane drones that support defense, public safety, disaster response, and commercial missions. Our platforms operate across air, ground, and maritime domains, integrating autonomy, AI-powered sensing, edge computing, and networked systems to deliver real-world intelligence and threat detection. We design, build, and deploy complete systems — hardware, software, and data — and we move fast.As WingXpand scales, we are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead and grow our engineering organization and drive execution of our most critical autonomous systems programs.

Position Description

WingXpand is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Electrical Engineer with hands-on experience in PCB design, embedded electronics, and electrical system integration for UAV and robotics platforms. In this role, you will contribute directly to the design, development, testing, and refinement of electronic systems used across WingXpand’s aircraft and subsystems. You’ll work closely with senior electrical engineers, embedded software developers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams to support prototype development, flight-ready systems, and scalable production builds. This is a hands-on, build-focused role ideal for an engineer who wants to work on real hardware, see systems fly, and grow technically in a fast-moving startup environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical & PCB Design

  • Support the design and development of PCBs and electrical subsystems for UAV platforms.
  • Assist with schematic capture, PCB layout, and design reviews.
  • Support component selection, power distribution, signal routing, and connector selection.
  • Help improve wiring harnesses and electrical integration across aircraft systems.

Embedded Systems & Hardware Integration

  • Work with embedded software engineers to support hardware bring-up and integration.
  • Assist with debugging, testing, and validation of embedded electronics.
  • Support integration of sensors, radios, flight controllers, and payload electronics.
  • Participate in system-level integration and ground/flight testing.

Manufacturing & Production Support

  • Support the transition of designs from prototype to low-rate and higher-volume manufacturing.
  • Assist with electrical documentation, wiring diagrams, and build instructions.
  • Support production builds, troubleshooting, and electrical QA testing.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing technicians to resolve build and integration issues.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with mechanical, embedded software, and manufacturing teams.
  • Provide feedback to improve design for manufacturability (DFM) and reliability.
  • Participate in design reviews, test reviews, and post-test debriefs.
  • Document designs, test results, and lessons learned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (robotics, systems engineering, or similar).
  • 2–5 years of experience in electrical engineering, embedded hardware, or electronics development roles (including internships or co-ops).
  • Experience with PCB design and electrical system development.
  • Working knowledge of embedded systems, microcontrollers, and digital/analog electronics.
  • Familiarity with hardware debugging, electrical testing, and system integration.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on startup environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of tasks and growing technical responsibility over time.

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience with UAVs, aerospace systems, robotics, or autonomous platforms.
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools such as Altium, OrCAD, KiCad, or similar.
  • Exposure to simulation or analysis tools (SPICE, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with soldering, prototyping, and lab equipment.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing or production environments.
  • FAA Part 107 certification or experience flying drones (a plus — we love engineers who also fly).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines.

What Else You Need to Know

  • This role is based on-site in Schaumburg, IL.
  • To comply with U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations, applicants must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident).
  • We offer a competitive compensation package based on experience, with opportunities for growth as WingXpand scales.
  • You’ll work on real aircraft systems that go from bench → build → flight.
